Lighting Design Project
I began the lighting project with the idea of an overhead reading light intended to sit over a chair. After the initial sketch, where everything was rigid and structured, I decided to move towards a more gentle and inviting shape, leading to the removal of any harsh seams. Experimenting with these ideas led to my final sketch, which is shown in orange. The biggest challenge I was faced with was hiding the on/off switch, as I felt it devalued the artistic aspect of the design.
Moving into onshape, a 3D modelling software, i went through many iterations of designs for the 'legs' and the 'head', some with rounded edges, some with entirely different shapes. after experimenting with these for a while, i decided it would be in my best interest to 3D print the 'legs' and 'head' separately, in order to ensure the piece would fit in the printer. This makes the piece, in a way, customisable and modular, as the legs simply click into place, allowing for custom pieces to be made.
Below is the final outcome before printing. Two angles show it standing as intended, and one shows the components separately.
